‘Students for Students’

… an initiative to support hungry students

We all know what it feels like to be hungry … many of us don’t know, though, what it feels like to be hungry and not know where our next meal will come from … sadly, there are many that do … and many amongst you, right here at UKZN   staff at Student Counselling Centres and Campus Health Clinics on all campuses often consult with students who are hungry and have no funds for food.

Research has shown that nutrition has implications for academic

performance, as it affects memory, concentration, motivation, and task performance, among other things (Goldsmith, 1980; Kleinman et al., 2002). This means that, aside from the negative implications for self-esteem and mood, students who are undernourished are disadvantaged in their studies.

‘Students for Students’ is a Howard College and Medical School, Student Counselling Centre, initiative, aimed to help hungry students at this time when exams are approaching and the pressure is on.

We would like to invite you, if you are able, to make a donation, in the form of an item of non-perishable food, to help students less fortunate than you.  Examples include tinned food, maize meal, lentils, pasta etc. The Student Counselling Centre will take responsibility for putting together food parcels and distributing them to hungry students.

Donations will be received at The Student Counselling and Careers Centre, Howard College and Medical School campuses.
